Poland in the Rockies July 20-31, 2006
Canmore, Alberta
Poland in the Rockies is an
international educational program bringing together university
students and distinguished
speakers from Canada, the
United States, Great Britain and Poland for an immersion in “things
Polish.”
Set
in the beautiful Rocky Mountain town of Canmore, Alberta, Poland
in the Rockies is a place for learning about Polish history and
culture, for discussing contemporary issues and the Polish heritage,
for hikes and campfires, for making new friends and creating links
with the world-wide Polish community.
The
subjects under discussion are Polish but the language of discussion
is English. While intended primarily for young people whose roots
are Polish, Poland in the Rockies is open to anyone who is
interested in Polish history and Polish
culture; in
the complex identity of Polonia, (the collective name for
Poles living abroad); in contemporary Poland and its place in
Europe, its relations with its neighbours, and its trans-Atlantic
relations with the United States and Canada; in Polonia's
relations with Poland and with the larger North American society of
which it is an intrinsic part..
The
program, intensive and intellectually stimulating, includes class
time, formal lectures, films, and discussions, both formal and
informal. Communal meals, excursions, hikes and campfires create a
relaxed atmosphere of easy camaraderie.
