Mark Starowicz

Mark Starowicz: acclaimed as the creator of "the most influential news programs in Canada," his radio and television work includes "As It Happens," "Sunday Morning" and "The Journal," and as head of the CBC's Television Documentary Unit, he created the award winning "Witness" and "Life and Times" series. His six-hour history of TV news, "The Dawn of the Eye" (1996), co-produced with the BBC, the American History Channel and A&E, was lauded by critics worldwide and is used in many journalism schools.

In 2003, he was creator and executive producer of the compelling 32-hour documentary series, CANADA: A PEOPLE'S HISTORY, a work hailed as an enduring national legacy. A graduate of McGill University, he has received honorary degrees from five major Canadian universities, was honored by The Canadian Club as "Canadian of the Year," and received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Journalism Foundation for his remarkable contribution to the industry and commitment to the highest journalistic standards and ideals over his 30-year career.

In May of 2004, Mr. Starowicz was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. Mr. Starowicz attributes his passion of history to his heritage. His father won the Polish Cross of Valour four times as a Polish bomber pilot with the Royal Air Force. His mother was in the Polish Resistance, imprisoned in a German internment camp and finally liberated by Canadian Forces. Polish President Lech Walesa awarded her the Cross of the Warsaw Rising.
